Distance is my Saving Grace

I work with the most objectionable person in the world.

This person does not work in my office but, rather, he works in our head office, in another country, the ONLY thing that has saved him from a torturous and painful fate on many occasions.

This is the man who can respond to any email in a way that makes you realise that he considers that you are not worthy to lick the dirt from his shoes. He, in not so many words, can tell you that you are the most ignorant waste of his time that he has ever had the misfortune of having to respond to. He ignores your emails and then when prompted for a second or third time makes it blatantly obvious that he is grossly annoyed at having to turn his attention from whatever mighty task he is currently occupied with. Whatever his task is will obviously be totally above your ability to understand, and then he is required to dumb his intellect down enough so that he can communicate with his obvious intellectual inferior. No email is exempt, the first order of the day is to point out how much his intellect, position in the company and general demeanour far out rank yours. Secondly pointing out what a foolish waste of his time answering your questions is. Thirdly, ridiculing your obvious lack of knowledge and your sad inability to retain said knowledge even if it is imparted to you. Finally a long winded and condescending run down of something totally unrelated to what you asked, skirting any issues you brought up and answering nothing.

I don’t know if this chap intentionally writes emails like this way (why would you?) or if he is just blessed with a talent of stringing words together in the most insulting way possible without even trying but every single email is like this.

It is very exhausting when you have to deal with him. To make matters worse he has a hand in almost everything and out of courtesy he is copied into a lot of interoffice emails so he tends to wade in and insult people just for the hell of it, butting into conversations that have been going on quite happily and ruining well laid plans. He throws out insults all round and makes people feel like they are unable to do their own jobs without his constant meddling.

I thank the heavens daily that we are not in the same office. At least working remotely gives me some sort of shielding. If he could just pop into my office and start berating me like that on a daily basis I think I’d hit him with a brick.
