Try to switch focus

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to write a list of things that annoy you?

You know the kinds of things

Anyone driving slower than you on the highway (move over Grandma)
Anyone driving faster than you on the highway (slow down you freaking maniac!)
People who tell me I have a zit on my nose (yeah thanks, it is comforting to know that everyone else notices it too)
.99c (for goodness sake, just make it a dollar, please)

I could give you 69 super annoying things in the time it takes me to type them out.

BUT

Have you ever tried to write a list of things that make you happy?

That will take a bit more thought.

Not because you are such a wretched, miserable, woeful human being leading such a cheerless, desolate, melancholy existence (you have access to a computer for goodness sake, go look at kitten videos on Youtube if you are that dejected) but because such things, for some reason, seem to dull into the trivial when you try to write them down.

Annoyance and frustration seem to be much stronger and motivating emotions than happiness and contentment. So what does that say about the human condition?

So me personally, what makes me happy? So many things, that’s the trouble with making a list. When you think about it there is so much that you enjoy, so much to be grateful for each day that it is sad that we don’t take more time out to notice and think about it.

Waking at night and hearing rain on the roof
Kitty cats, all of them, everywhere
Sunshine on a cloudy day (inadvertent song reference there)
Solving a problem that has been haunting me for weeks
Seeing people I love happy, even little moments like my husband enjoying his morning coffee
My Daughter wanting to go shopping with me
Babies laughing
Yellow flowers growing along the roadside

These things might all seem trivial but they all make day after day worth living.

Life is so good but all the trials and tribulations get us down so easily. It’s not always easy to focus on the good and wholesome things in our lives. I think we’d be just a little bit happier if we all tried a bit harder to switch our focus.
